MESP 2013 Year in Review

 MESP 2013 Year in Review

The MESP had a productive 2013 where we continued to expand our partnership and update our library of studies. The MESP library now has over 900 valuation studies for marine and coastal environments. We plan to continue updating our library in the New Year and will continue to share our PDFs of studies with anyone who asks for them.  We also had a busy year reaching out to partners and expanding our community of practice. A few highlights from 2013 include:

·         MESP Newsletter and Listserv: Launched a year ago in January 2013, the MESP newsletter and listserv now has over 500 subscribers. Interested in sharing a news item, project, or job listing? Email mesplist@duke.edu.

·         Co-Hosted Marine Session at ESP Conference: The MESP helped organize the marine sessions at the 2013 Ecosystem Services Partnership Conference in Bali, focusing on ecosystem services in marine management, financing, and blue carbon.

·         Webinar with Earth Economics: The MESP co-hosted a webinar with EBM Tools and OpenChannels to demonstrate the MESP’s database of valuation studies and Earth Economics’ Ecosystem Valuation Toolkit. The Toolkit includes a library of data and a self-service tool for valuation.

·         Webinar with NOEP and GecoServ: The MESP hosted a webinar with our partners at the National Ocean Economics Program (NOEP) and GecoServ. The NOEP provides policy-relevant economic information for the U.S. coast, Great Lakes, and coastal waters; while GecoServ focuses on ES valuation studies in the Gulf of Mexico region.

·         Office Hours with OpenChannels: Linwood Pendleton, the MESP’s Director, hosted an Office Hour chat at OpenChannels - answering questions on marine and coastal ecosystem services.

·         ICRI Membership: The MESP formally became a member of the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) in October 2013 at ICRI’s 29th General Meeting in Belize.

The MESP is looking forward to a productive 2014. We already have a few webinars lined up highlighting work by our partners including:
