Guidance Manual on Valuation and Accounting of Ecosystem Services for Small Island Developing States

Primary Country: Multiple
Ecosystem: multiple
Sample Value Estimates:
(a) US$65.3 per year as Willingness to Pay [WTP] by ecoutourism dependent businesses for protection on Windward Islands. This is just the first listed of 61 case studies used to illustrate the main concepts and techniques associated with ecosystem services valuation and accounting in SIDS. The guidance manual is designed to help policymakers carry out ecosystem services valuation and accounting. (b) US$16.6 million and US$9.1 million, respectively for mean annual revenues from reef and mangrove-dependent fish in the Dominican Republic [Wielgus et al. 2010]. Wielgus used the production function method to assess the contribution of coral reefs and mangroves to fishery production. This is the first of many examples demonstrating different valuation techniques such as: production function, market price, travel cost, hedonic pricing, replacement cost, contingent valuation and choice experiments and value transfer.
